It seems lately that I have been getting more than the usual amount of questions about people who had an FHA loan or who are currently in an FHA loan and are wondering about their Up Front Mortgage Insurance Premium (UFMIP) account and whether or not they are due an MIP Refund.

When someone asks me directly "am I due an MIP Refund from HUD?"  My first response is usually "well, it depends..." and then I outline a few situations where someone may be eligible for a MIP Refund and a few situations where someone would not be eligible for an MIP Refund.  Usually, after a brief conversation, it is pretty clear whether or not someone is due a refund.

Sometimes though there are still questions that I cannot answer (such as "did I already get an MIP Refund for the FHA loan I had in 2004?") and I refer them to the HUD hotline that can answer these questions.

From the www.HUD.gov website:

Question:
I was supposed to get a Mortgage Insurance Premium (MIP) refund, but haven't received it yet. Who do I contact?

Answer:
HUD has a toll-free number for MIP refunds, 1-800-697-6967.
