Loan Modification: Am I Getting A Good Deal?

This is a common question lately. Many people are starting to get proposals from their lender on a loan modification because they have been working towards getting a loan modification done for months.

When your lender proposes a loan modification to you, how do you know if you are getting a good deal?  How do you know whether or not you could "do better"? Is there an independent source somewhere that tells you whether or not you are getting a good deal on your loan modification?
